King Charles appeared visibly emotional today as he led the Royal Family in remembering war heroes at the Cenotaph in London. The monarch, 76, laid a wreath at the memorial and was joined by senior royals as they paid their respects to the war dead.

During the event, which included a two-minute silence, the King, 76, appeared to be fighting back tears. This is not the first time the monarch has looked emotional at a Remembrance Day event.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, body language expert Judi James said the King appeared “reflective” throughout the service.

She said: “King Charles, standing looking more solitary than usual, was conspicuously backed up by a severely diminished Royal Family line-up, with Princess Anne missing and of course Andrew absent. As a result of this, and obviously the occasion itself, he appeared to be in a rather emotional state here.

“His eyes looked red-rimmed despite the relatively mild weather, and they appeared to glisten with tears throughout.

“His expression appeared reflective, but his features moved about to suggest suppressed emotions. He seemed to be swallowing heavily and his mouth moved a lot as he looked up at the Cenotaph.

“His emotional demeanor prompted a look of warmth, pride and support from Camilla, looking down from the royal balcony. As Charles walked back into the building she was seen throwing him a smile that seemed to signal 'Well done' to a husband whose tentative and slightly heavy gait hinted he was feeling a little frailer than usual.”

The King was joined by a number of senior royals today including Queen Camilla, Prince William and Princess Kate.

Other royals present included The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and The Duke of Kent.

The Princess Royal, who usually attends the event, was not present to support her brother as she is currently overseas carrying out military-themed engagements in Australia.
