Legendary rocker Kenney Jones once ‘peed on’ King Charles’s shoes after a polo match.

Jones, 76, rose to fame as a drummer with Small Faces and The Who, being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. But it was at the Hurtwood Park Polo Club in leafy Surrey that he had an unfortunate encounter with royalty.

The club became Jones’s pride and joy after he managed to transform the venue, complete with a reconstructed 18th century barn as a clubhouse. Since becoming the chairman of the club, he has welcomed royalty from both at home and abroad.

Princess Diana was a visitor to the club with both Prince William and Harry having played at Ewhurst venue. Even Prince Albert of Monaco has been known to grace the grounds.

But it was an encounter after a game with the-then Prince Charles that left the rocker red-faced, reports Daily Mail Diary Editor Richard Eden. Jones said: “We'd played a match, and I was having a pee.

“I said to my son, ‘Has Prince Charles gone?’ 'I hear this voice saying, ‘No, he's still here.’

“It was Prince Charles. I was so surprised, I turned round and p***ed on his boots.”

Jones believes the monarch still has the boots today. Sitting on a 180-acre plot, Hurtwood boasts four polo pitches, a clubhouse barn and stables.

It has been used for polo since the late 1990s. The club however faced difficult times after the royals reportedly cut down on playing polo.

In 2013, it fell into administration but Jones vowed not to let the club slip out of his control, reports MailOnline. A source told the publication: “Princess Diana would go there when Charles played and Prince Albert of Monaco has also been there as a guest.

“It's a tough time now for sponsors because the royals don't play polo much so the sport has been struggling.”

Jones attempted to expand the polo club, including new homes, a hotel and stables in 2014 but faced stiff opposition from neighbours. The plan was refused and the club was listed for sale at £5million in 2023, which was later reduced to £4m.

Estate agent Clark Gammon says there are “possible long term planning opportunities on some of the land”. The clubhouse, which was moved from Sussex, is currently used to host parties, weddings, and corporate events.
