Prince William has revealed a present he once bought for Princess Kate that "didn't go well" - despite him believing it was a "good idea at the time".

The Prince and Princess of Wales met in 2001 while they were both studying at St. Andrews University in Scotland. A decade later on April 29, 2011, they married at Westminster Abbey in London.

There is no doubt that over the years, William will always pick out something special for Princess Kate.

However, he admitted that one present he bought her in the early days of their relationship didn't seem to go down well at all.

The Prince of Wales made the admission during an appearance on Peter Crouch's podcast on BBC Radio Five Live in 2020. In a discussion about presents, the former England striker confessed to buying wife Abbey Clancy a raincoat for her birthday three years running.

William then admitted: "I did get my wife a pair of binoculars once - she's never let me forget that.

"That was early on in the courtship that was - I think that sealed the deal. It didn't go well.

"Honestly, I have no idea why I bought her a pair of binoculars, it seemed like a good idea at the time."

Earlier this year, William took home gifts for Princess Kate and their children following an engagement with Armed Forces personnel.

The Prince of Wales completed his first engagement as colonel-in-chief of the Army Air Corps on May 13, during which he was given presents for his family.

He was given a tartan wrap for Kate, a scarf for himself, and wooden helicopters for children Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, nine, and Prince Louis, six, according to GB News.

The Princess of Wales was continuing to recover at home in Adelaide Cottage after announcing she was undergoing preventative chemotherapy for cancer in April.

Royal fans took to social media to praise the military personnel for considering William's family when getting gifts.

One said: "Nice of them to think of our Princess of Wales. Our gallant men in uniform."

A second added: "Such thoughtful gestures."
