A ROYAL EXPERT has accused Martin Bashir of creating a "climate of terror and fear" for the late Princess of Wales in order to secure an interview.
Princess Diana: Bashir created 'climate of fear' says expert
Saturday night's gripping Channel 4 documentary 'The Diana Interview: Truth Behind the Scandal' delved into the story of how BBC journalist Martin Bashir secured his world exclusive with Princess Diana. Royal biographer and journalist Andrew Morton examined the practices deployed by Mr Bashir including the so-called '32 lies' which Mr Morton said created a "climate of terror and fear" for Diana. He explained how Bashir also knew of the tragic Princess's "susceptibilities" and "buttons to push" in order to scare her and take advantage.
The royal journalist said: “It is an extraordinary story of Walter Mitty-ish behaviour.
“The Princess of Wales, all her susceptibilities, all the buttons which you could push - Martin very cleverly and very skilfully pushed."
Mr Morton added: “Martin’s technique was two-fold, one was the gift of the gab.
“Secondly, a sense of drama."

The Royal biographer highlighted: “On one occasion, for example, Martin and Diana met in an underground car park. They are sinister places at the best of times, when you are predisposed to think that somebody is going to bump you off.
“A climate of terror and fear, and I am quoting one of Diana’s confidantes there, can be easily created.”
And in a sad conclusion, Mr Morton said: “This is what happened - Diana was transported from a world of suspicion to one of morbid terror and fear.”

The documentary also delved into the so-called '32 lies' which Mr Bashir crafted to create this "climate of terror and fear".
Diana's brother Earl Spencer kept a record of Bashir's lies.
One of the most incendiary of the lies was when it was claimed Prince Charles bought Prince William a watch with a recording device implanted inside in order to record conversations Diana was having.
Another was that the Queen was “very ill with heart problems” and was “a comfort eater”.
Amongst the fabricated lies Bashir constructed were also allegations Diana's private secretary Patrick Jephson was being paid by MI5 to leak information to secret services about her - all of which were not true.

The BBC was left with its reputation in tatters following the scathing review by Lord Dyson into the BBC's behaviour prior to and following Mr Bashir's world-exclusive Panorama interview.
The review outlines how the BBC "covered up" an inquiry into the forged documents used by Mr Bashir to secure the infamous interview.
It also added how "deceitful" practices were deployed in order to gain access to Princess Diana via her brother, Earl Spencer, amongst a host of other findings which have torn apart the reputation of the BBC as a taxpayer-funded body.
In response to the findings, Prince William dealt a devastating blow to the BBC in a statement attacking its core practices.
He branded the Panorama interview which his late mother featured as having "no legitimacy and should never be aired again".
