Princess Diana was ‘quite terrified’ by the Queen – ‘Unlikely ally’
PRINCESS Diana is said to have been "quite terrified" of the Queen, but it is suggested Her Majesty eventually became her "unlikely ally".
Princess Diana: Jennie Bond recalls receiving fashion advice
The Princess of Wales was “governed” by her status as wife to the heir to the throne, according to a royal expert. Andrew Morton, author of ‘Diana: Her True Story’, claimed the late royal was “terrified” by the Monarch, and would often keep her distance from her.
The author wrote that Diana was "governed by the fact that she was married to her older son and a future Monarch".
He added: "Diana was quite simply terrified of her mother-in-law.”
Mr Morton explained that the late Princess ”kept the formal obsequies — dropping a deep curtsy each time they met — but otherwise kept her distance."
However, Diana is said to have enjoyed a close bond with her father-in-law Prince Philip, who purportedly encouraged her marriage to Prince Charles.
The relationship between the Duke of Edinburgh and Diana was uncovered in a series of letters sent in 1992, before Diana separated from Prince Charles in December that year.
The letters suggest Diana and Philip shared a close relationship, with the Duke offering his daughter-in-law honest relationship advice.
Prince Philip referred to himself and his wife, the Queen, as "Ma and Pa".
In one letter, he wrote: "I can only repeat what I have said before.
"If invited, I will do my utmost to help you and Charles to the best of my ability.
"But I am quite ready to concede that I have no talent as a marriage counsellor!"
In response, Diana wrote: "Dearest Pa, I was particularly touched by your most recent letter, which proved to me, if I did not already know it, that you really do care.
"You are very modest about your marriage guidance skills, and I disagree with you!"
Another letter from Diana read: "I would like you to know how much I admire you for the marvellous way in which you have tried to come to terms with this intensely difficult family problem."
