Prince Louis title: The sweet tribute Kate and William made with youngest son's name
PRINCE LOUIS was born in 2018 and it is possible his unusual royal name was chosen by Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William as a sweet tribute to another famous royal.
Royal titles: A look at the British line of succession
Kate, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William are proud parents to three royal children: Prince George, 6, Princess Charlotte, 5, and Prince Louis, 2. George and Charlotte’s names are both very traditional names in British royal history. However, the Cambridge’s decision to name their youngest son Louis prompted many royal fans to wonder what had inspired Kate and William’s decision to give their youngest child the unusual name.
Prince Louis was born with the middle names Arthur and Charles, and is known formally as His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge.
Louis is often a name associated with the French monarchy of the past, and was the name of many French kings.
As it turns out, the name Louis also has also appeared a number of times in other British royal names.
Prince William holds the name Louis as his third middle name, and it is also Prince George’s second middle name.

But William and Kate’s decision to name their youngest child Louis is thought to be rooted in a tribute to a famous member of the Royal Family.
Lord Louis Mountbatten was Prince Philip’s uncle, and he was known to be a close confidante of both Prince Philip and Prince Charles.
Lord Louis was born in Windsor in 1900, the brother of Prince Philip’s mother Princess Alice of Battenberg.
However, as a great-grandson of Queen Victoria himself, Louis was also a distant cousin of the current Queen.
Louis had a very involved role in the Royal Family, and it is thought it was he who first introduced the then 13-year-old Princess Elizabeth to Philip while the royals toured Dartmouth Royal Naval College.
Upon becoming naturalised as a British citizen, Prince Philip adopted the surname of Louis and his mother’s family, Mountbatten.
Mountbatten still forms part of the Royal Family’s chosen surname today, with the latest royal arrival born to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry as Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor.
To the Royal Family, Louis was affectionately known as ‘Uncle Dickie’.

In August 1979, Lord Mountbatten was killed off the coast of Ireland while on his fishing boat, Shadow V.
His death was the result of a terrorist attack by the Irish Republican Army (IRA).
It is possible the decision to include the name Louis in a number of royal middle names is in tribute to Lord Mountbatten.
Prince Louis is likely to see his royal title change in the future, as is the case with many members of the Royal Family.
The Queen often awards her family members a new royal title when they get married.
Prince William became the Duke of Cambridge upon his marriage to Kate Middleton in 2011.
Although royal children do not technically require a surname, whenever they require them all of William and Kate’s children use the surname of Cambridge, such as when they are in school.
In the future, depending on which royal titles are in use, Louis could inherit the dukedom of Cambridge when he marries.
