Prince William and Prince Harry are now happily settled down in married life, with Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle respectively. However, in their younger days, the royal brothers and their partying ways caused some concern for their grandparents, Her Majesty the Queen and Prince Philip. Katie Nicholl in her 2010 book ‘William and Harry’ delves into the lives of the young princes behind the scenes.
She reveals that in 2007 the young princes were criticised for frequenting high-end nightclubs like Boujis with Kate Middleton and Harry’s then girlfriend Chelsy Davy.
Ms Nicholl writes: “The Queen was not impressed.
“Not for the first time, she questioned why her grandsons and their girlfriends were so intent on visiting such high-profile establishments."
A family friend told Ms Nicholl: “The Queen cannot understand why her grandchildren go to places where they will be photographed and attract attention.
“Philip has told William and Harry to stay away from Boujis for a bit.”
It was not the first time that the young princes had incurred the displeasure of their grandparents.
Ms Nicholl also reveals how the Queen and Prince Philip were ‘in despair’ when the teenaged Harry was caught drinking underage and smoking marijuana in 2001.
She writes: “Fortunately Harry escaped an official police warning but the incident sent shockwaves through the royal family.
“According to one aide, the Queen and Prince Philip were ‘in despair’ when they were informed.”
The Duke of Edinburgh also had some harsh words for William, when he told the young prince to “knuckle down and not wimp out” when he was considering ending his studies at the University of St Andrews.
