In the run up to Prince Charles and Diana announcing their engagement in February 1981, speculation had been rife about the future King’s love life as he entered his thirties still a bachelor. Then royal photographer Arthur Edward captured a picture of Lady Diana Spencer, sparking huge public interest around the young bride-to-be. However, he says she was initially “horrified”, as the photo showed her in a transparent skirt.
Netflix documentary ‘The Diana Story’, originally aired in 2017, delves into the story behind the famous photograph.
The film hears from Mr Edwards, who took the picture of the young Lady Diana when she was working at a nursery in Pimlico in late 1980.
He said: “My job, given to me by the editor at the time, was to find out who Prince Charles was going to marry.
“My contact said, he’s with a girl called Lady Diana Spencer, she works in a nursery.”
“I went round to about four or five different nurseries
“I said, ‘Does Lady Diana Spencer work here?’ They said, ‘Yes, she does.’ I said, ‘Would she come out for a photograph?”
The famous pictures shows the 19-year-old Diana surrounded by children in St George’s Square, in Pimlico, central London.
Mr Edwards continued: “She posed, and half way through taking the photographs the sun came out.
