Boris Johnson is being drafted in to woo wavering voters amid a growing threat from Nigel Farage’s Reform UK. The former Prime Minister has signed tens of thousands of letters to people who supported the Conservatives when he led it.

Tory strategists are concerned that many of the voters who backed the party for the first time in 2019 will abandon the party for either Reform UK or Labour.

Nigel Farage has claimed his party is ahead of the Conservatives in much of northern England and the Midlands.

But the Conservatives have also held discussions about Mr Johnson appearing on the campaign trail to boost the party’s fortunes.

Prior to the election, there were months of speculation about what role Mr Johnson might play, having previously told former MP friends he would campaign for them.

However, the Express revealed that the shock date change may have hampered Mr Johnson’s ability to play as full a role as he would have liked to had the election been held in the Autumn.

Mr Johnson has entered the campaign endorsing candidates through videos on the social media platform X.

The former Prime Minister also warned Britons who vote for Reform will get a “dangerous” Sir Keir Starmer majority.

Isaac Levido, the Tory campaign manager who also ran Mr Johnson’s successful 2019 election bid, has remained in contact with the former Prime Minister.

They are understood to have discussed how Mr Johnson could help out the Conservatives’ campaign.

On why the Tory campaign wanted to deploy him, the source said: “The simple answer is he gets cut through. That is a rarity in this Conservative campaign.”

A spokesman for Mr Johnson said: “Boris Johnson has always said ‘vote Conservative’ at every election and he continues to say that this time.”
