Election 2024: Keir Starmer jeered as he talks about dad's toolmaker job

Audience members have laughed at Sir Keir Starmer for calling himself the son of a toolmaker during a general election debate.

The Labour leader was asked whether he would be “personally happy” to pay more tax.

Sir Keir said: “Of course... I accept I earn a lot of money in the job I am now in.”

There was then laughter from the audience when Sir Keir said “my dad was a toolmaker, my mum was a nurse, and actually we couldn’t make ends meet, which isn’t a laughing matter”.

“A lot of people today are in precisely the same position as I was in.

"Politics is about your policies, of course it is. But it’s also who do you have in your mind’s eye when you make your decisions?

I am thinking about the people who are struggling with their bills. I’m thinking about the working people wo deserve a better Britain.”

Sir Keir and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak were grilled by Sky's political editor Beth Rigby during a debate in Grimsby.

They then faced questions from the studio audience.

Sir Keir was heckled by members of the audience during the 25-minute interrogation by members of the public.

Before the audience questions began, speaking over Sir Keir, the member of the public accused the politician of talking only about “the past and the present”.

They said: “You’ve still not, after 15-20 minutes, gone on to the future and this growth process that you’re going to go to.”

Sir Keir said: “Well thank you for raising that because what we’ve done is we’ve set out the big change that we want to make but also what the first steps will be that we can do on day one.

“So the day after the election, I want to start on our first steps stabilising the economy to make sure we never go through a cost-of-living crisis like this before (sic), set up Great British Energy so we can keep your bills down, I want to start on the 40,000 appointments each and every week that we need to get the waiting list down in our NHS.

“We will be doing that the morning after the election and that is what I look forward to most.”
