Nigel Farage had a drink thrown over him outside a pub after kicking off his General Election campaign in Clacton.

The Reform UK leader was leaving the Moon and Starfish pub when a woman pelted him with what appeared to be a milkshake.

A 25-year-old woman was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assault before a man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker.

The Brexit architect had been speaking to reporters in the Wetherspoon venue after his rally at Clacton Pier.

He was seen with the drink splattered over his suit as he boarded his campaign bus.

Mr Farage earlier addressed hundreds of supporters at a packed rally in the Essex town after announcing he would stand for election there.

Ex-Reform leader Richard Tice hit out at the "juvenile moron" who targeted Mr Farage.

He said: "The juvenile moron who threw a drink over Nigel has just gained us hundreds of thousands more votes.

"We will not be bullied or threatened off the campaign trail."

Meanwhile, Tory candidate Giles Watling said: "I'm sorry to hear Nigel Farage has had drinks thrown at him in Clacton-on-Sea today - we may disagree, but every candidate has the right to campaign without fear of violence or intimidation!"

It comes after the ex-Ukip leader yesterday U-turned on his previous decision not to run on July 4 in a stunning change of mind.

Addressing a rally at Clacton Pier this afternoon, Mr Farage hit out at the Tories over the handling of Brexit: "We made an offer to the British people, we could get back our independence and control of our borders.

"But what has happened? The Conservatives have betrayed that trust. They've opened up the borders to mass immigration like we've never seen before.

"And they deserve to pay a price for that, a big price for that."

Mr Farage said the General Election was already effectively over: "That breach of trust from the Conservatives means they are finished, they are done.

"We are going to get a Labour government. Whether you like it or not, we are going to get a Labour government - the question is, who is going to be the voice of opposition?"

He urged voters to "send me to Parliament to be a bloody nuisance".

He said: "A Labour government won't make any real changes at all, we need radical surgery in this country."

Essex Police confirmed that the man and woman arrested remain in custody.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Officers have made two arrests after responding to a report a drink was thrown at a man in Clacton.
