Netflix could soon stop working on your Sony TV - is your model on the hit list?

One of the best things about modern smart TVs is the ability to download streaming apps directly and watch all your favourite shows and films without the need for an Amazon Fire TV Stick or Google Chromecast. But if you have a Sony TV in your living room and currently enjoy streaming Netflix via the in-built app, it could be about to stop working.

Sony has announced on its website that 42 of its Bravia branded tellies are going to lose the ability to stream Netflix due to “technical limitations”. All the TVs were released in 2014, so you may have been streaming Netflix in this way for close to a decade. Unfortunately if your TV is on the list lower down this page, that’s about to change.

The exact date you can keep watching Netflix until is 23 July - after that, the app will disappear.

“Netflix announced that on July 24, 2024, the Netflix app will no longer be supported on some 2014 Sony Bravia LCD TVs due to technical limitations,” Sony said on its website. “You can continue to use the Netflix app on your TV until July 23, 2024. After this date, it will be removed from the Apps menu.”

It seems that while thousands of these TVs will still be beaming shows into living rooms up and down the country, the march of technology means their hardware has become too outdated to run the latest version of the Netflix app. Technology coming to the end of its life is something we are all used to, but we still replace our TVs far less frequently than we do our phones, tablets, or even headphones.

Thankfully if you want to keep streaming Netflix on your Sony TV, it’s quite easy to do so. You can simply invest in an Amazon Fire TV Stick, a device that plugs into an HDMI port you’ll find on the back or side of your television. If you’re not sure what model number your TV is, you can check either on the device itself where it may be printed on the casing somewhere, or otherwise check in the settings menu using your remote control.
