A cleaning expert has shared some advice for anyone who needs to give their metal water bottle a thorough clean.

Laura de Barra, author of the Gaff Goddess and a number of other books, explained an effective way to deep clean water bottles without using harsh chemicals.

In a video from March this year, she said if you own a metal water bottle, they should be rinsed every morning or twice a day.

But when it comes to deep cleaning, Laura says there’s a store cupboard staple which can help you do the job.

The cleaning expert described her hack as the “eco-friendly” way to clean water bottles.

She recommended avoiding washing up brushes with sponges attached to them, as they can “shed microplastics” within the bottle.

Laura said: “I would be doing this probably once a week, it’s super quick and easy. Just get any rice, you just don’t want the ones that are already a little cooked in the pouch, you want the hard rice.

“I give it a little bit of a clean first just to make sure the rice is nice and clean going in. Then I’ll pour it into the bottom of the bottle, and cold water - you do not want hot water for this part because it’s only going to cook the rice and soften it.”

Adding a small amount of water to the bottle, Laura then adds a small amount of washing up liquid too.

Replacing the cap back on the bottle, she then begins to move the bottle around so then moves around the inside.

Laura explained: “That will literally scrape off the dirt inside because it’s nice and hard, but it’s not hard enough to damage the bottle… If you just work the rice around the inside of the bottle it’ll give it a nice, thorough scrub.

“The dirtier the bottle, the longer you want to spend doing this, and you want to be able to rinse that washing up liquid out with warm water. That should get your bottle nice and clean.”

She reminded her followers to wok the rice-washing up liquid concoction into the base of the water bottle too.

Cleaning fans praised Laura for her simple water bottle hack, with some swearing by the tip.

Others suggested some moving-saving hacks of their own, user @jbaz999 said: “Honestly first hack I’ve ever seen that is super clever and useful!!!”

Rainier Jacobs said: “Instead of rice you can use salt. I use soap, salt and vinegar.”

SDS added: “this is how my mom cleaned baby bottles etc back in the 70s etc. works like a charm.”

Tommy said: “Steradent(denture tablets) work BRILL for this too!! Just pop one in to bottle with warm water overnight.”

Laura further explains that to prevent clogging up the sink’s drain, she uses a sieve to catch any excess. This can then be thrown away in the bin.
