Bed sheets must be washed at the ‘ideal’ temperature to kill bed bugs - not 40C or 60C
Bedding is the number one place in homes that houses bed bugs so they need to be properly cleaned using the "ideal" temperature experts recommend.
Bedding is a pain to wash but the chore needs to be done, especially if you think you have bed bugs or want to prevent them.
Dr Jonathan Kirby, pest expert at NOPE!, Warned that September sees a spike in bed bug problems and has stressed the importance of regular checks for these pests.
He advised: “Bed bugs love to hide in small, dark areas. That’s why it’s so important to regularly clean items in the home, as well as regularly check for signs of bed bugs.”
He also suggested nocturnal inspections, saying: “They are nocturnal, so try looking at night if you want to catch them crawling across your mattress.”
Kirby continued, highlighting the tell-tale signs of bites: “Also look out for noticeable marks on the body such as flat, red spots in lines or clusters, blisters that may itch, red rashes and small areas of pronounced bleeding on the skin.”

To reduce the risk of bites, he recommends covering up exposed skin if you suspect there’s an infestation in your midst.
For those worried about their sleeping space, Dr Kirby said to watch for clusters of dark, dotted stains on mattresses or bedding, which could signal trouble.
Other indicators of a bed bug issue include musty odours and finding shell casings around.
While getting rid of bed bugs isn't impossible, Dr Kirby emphasises the need for vigilance and regular washing of bedding to keep these unwelcome guests at bay.

The first step is to shake all bedding and clothes outdoors to dislodge eggs, shed skins, and deceased bed bugs.
He then advises laundering all affected bedding and garments at an “ideal” temperature above 60C to kill lingering pests.
Next on the expert’s list is a thorough vacuum of suspected bed bug territories in the home, including mattresses and the vicinity of beds.
They caution that bed bugs can also hide out in kitchen waste bins, so it’s essential to promptly empty the vacuum and bin the waste outside the house.
After cleaning, applying an effective bed bug killer to furnishings and furniture is recommended, which can keep them at bay for up to three months.
The pest control guru elaborated: “The best method to avoid infestations is prevention. Make sure to regularly vacuum mattresses and bedding, paying particular attention to seams and corners, and repair cracks in walls, skirting boards and any small defect a bed bug could infest.
“Additionally, before bringing items into your home like second-hand furniture and holiday clothing, check for signs of bed bugs.”
