Let's face it, cleaning the toilet is nobody's favourite chore.

Bending over to scrub away those unpleasant stains in the loo doesn't exactly spark joy. Failing to keep on top of your toilet-cleaning regime can result in unsightly limescale and harmful bacteria multiplying at breakneck speed.

Thankfully, most toilet cleansers are designed with those handy angled nozzles for easy application around the bowl.

Yet, it seems we've all been making a common mistake when it comes to cleaning our toilets, inefficaciously using up our precious cleaning products. A life-changing tip has set the internet ablaze, revealing the error in our ways - though not everyone is convinced.

The TikTok channel NYT Wirecutter, with its sterling reputation for trustworthy product reviews and valuable advice, boasts an impressive following of 89,500 enraptured by its content.

A recent video released by the channel presents a bold claim: simply pouring bleach into the toilet might not be the smartest move, reports the Mirror.

According to the viral sensation, the proper technique involves first emptying a pail of water into the toilet to initiate a flush without topping up the bowl from the tank. It's after this step that you should add the bleach to the bowl and give it a good scrub with a toilet brush.

"That way the water won't dilute the cleaning solution," notes the eye-opening clip. The comments section lit up with hundreds of users eager to weigh in with their takes on this contentious cleaning hack.

"What? Awesome hack," one user exclaimed. Another chimed in: "Well, I was today years old when I realised this instead of fighting with the scrubber in the water."

However, many criticised the tip, arguing that toilet cleaner is often concentrated and should be diluted with water.

One sceptic warned: "[There's] no need to do all these extra steps. It's made to wash with water in the bowl."

Echoing this sentiment, another added: "Ain't nobody got time for that."

Users pointed out that in America, toilet bowls typically contain a large amount of water, contrasting with the practice in many other countries. "Meanwhile, in Europe our amount of water is about the same as when you poured the bucket in, so we don't have this problem," an international user noted.
