‘I’m a fabric expert - this is how to stop your bedding fading over time’
Bedding can fade over time due to incorrect washing techniques and using the wrong detergents.
Cleaning hack: Home expert advises on washing bed sheets
With autumn around the corner, many people will be updating their bedding, sheets and duvets ready for cooler temperatures.
Unfortunately, bed sheets sometimes fade when they’re laundered at home using regular cleaning techniques.
Bright-coloured bedding, in particular, can lighten and fade, especially if the manufacturer didn’t use pigments or dyes that are colourfast.
With this in mind, Gareth Coxall, creative and marketing director at Terrys has shared exclusively with Express.co.uk how to stop bedding fading.
He said: “Washing bedding on a cool, gentle cycle using mild detergent helps prevent fading, as well as being better for the environment and your energy bills.
“The use of colour-brightening detergent can also help give coloured sheets a boost.”
For white bedding, the fabric expert suggested using white vinegar and baking soda to keep white sheets “looking crisp”.
White vinegar can be used to soften bedding, remove bacteria and banish stains.

Baking soda is a great laundry product because it’s a mild alkali and be used to remove dirt and grease.
The natural ingredient can prevent a buildup of stains and is particularly useful in hard water areas.
Both white vinegar and baking soda can be purchased from local supermarkets or online.
To help prevent bedding from fading, homeowners can use blackout blinds or curtains can actually help too.
He continued: “These window coverings prevent sunlight from entering your room when drawn, preventing prolonged exposure to sunlight which will cause bedding to fade over time.
“It’s a good idea to have a few sets of sheets on rotation, too, as this will prevent you from overusing the same bedding, and decreasing its likelihood to fade.”
