Banish spiders from the house – The 'effective' SEVEN plants to repel arachnids
SEPTEMBER marks the beginning of the spider mating season when arachnids are often spotted lurking around the home. So, what are the key plants that will prevent the eight-legged creatures from invading the house?
How to get rid of spiders from your home using peppermint oil
The use of chemical repellents may be an obvious choice for getting rid of arachnids. However, aromatic-smelling plants are also known to repel spiders, so, which varieties are the most effective to have in the home?
Lavender
Lavender is an effective way to repel spiders.
The aromatic plant has a pungent smell and is often used in essential oils.
To prevent arachnids from entering a home, hang a cutting or a bunch of lavender in every room of the house.
Mint
Fresh mint leaves can be used to repel arachnids.

A natural repellent can be made by combining a few mint leaves to a spray bottle containing water.
Once the ingredients have been left to combine, the repellent can be sprayed at entry points around the home, including windowsills and doorways.
“There’s many old-wives’ tales about how conkers can repel spiders, but many don’t know that a lot of fragrant plants can do just that,” explained Evie Lane, a gardening expert at Primrose.
Rosemary
Although rosemary may not have a pungent odour, spiders find the aroma strong. The herb should be grown indoors as it does not thrive in cold temperatures.

The herb can be grown in a pot.
Chrysanthemum
Chrysanthemums contain pyrethrum, which is a chemical extract often used in insect repellents.
The chemical is also effective at repelling ticks, fleas, ants, spider mites, cockroaches and bed bugs.
Highlighting the benefits of placing aromatic plants around the home, Evie explained: “Most spider-deterring plants have a strong odour since aromatic plants are generally more effective at repelling insects, but they still smell great in your home too."
Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus is an effective plant for repelling spiders.
Sprigs of the plant can be placed in different rooms around the home.
Eucalyptus leaves can be added with water and witch hazel, before being sprayed around in corners of the house to prevent spiders from spinning webs.
Marigolds
Marigolds have a fragrant smell and can be placed around the house.
Basil
Basil has a strong aroma to repel spiders. The herb can be grown indoors and must be exposed to around four to five hours of direct sunlight.
Outdoor areas should also be kept clean to avoid providing a safe place for spiders to lurk.
Evie added: “By keeping the exterior of your home free of any debris and picking up any leaves and wood piles, you’re clearing any potential hideouts for spiders.
"That means they won’t be lurking near your home come mating season.”
