'Historic' and 'well-connected' village is one of the best places to live in the UK

The village offers country living but is less than two hours from London by train.

Nestled in the beautiful green Wiltshire countryside, Tisbury is the largest village to be found in the Nadder Valley. The village, home to an array of chocolate box homes and quaint streets steeped in history, was named earlier this year as one of the best places to live in the UK by The Sunday Times.

Tisbury made it into the top places to live in the southwest, missing out on the top spot to Sherborne in Dorset, offering residents all the perks of countryside living while still being well-connected to the big smoke.

Tisbury is the largest settlement within the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and more than 2,000 years of history can be found in its streets. In 2011, in a field near Tisbury, a Bronze Age hoard of more than 100 objects thought to date back over 2,700 years was discovered by a metal detectorist.

Just three miles from the village is Old Wardour Castle, a ruined 14th-century castle built in the 1390s, which is the perfect day for a relaxed day out, surrounded by lovely walks.

Messums Wiltshire, a leading multi-purpose gallery and arts centre which calls the historic tithe barn home, offers world-class exhibitions right on Tisbury's doorstep.

To top it off, one of the UK's most famous landmarks, Stonehenge, is a mere 25-minute drive away.

"The gravitational pull of Tisbury and its chemist, leisure centre, swimming pool and rustic yet bouji high street is, it seems, hard to resist," noted the Times in its round-up of Best Places to Live 2024.

The high street has seen a number of independent specialist businesses open their doors, including The Beckford Bottle shop, described by The Times as "the most civilised offie in Britain".

There are also a number of quaint boutiques which are dotted along the high street. Of course, no village is complete without its fair share of pubs. Perhaps one of the finest in the area is The Beckford Arms, a traditional yet stylish country inn located on the edge of the stunning rolling parkland of the Fonthill Estate, just a five-minute drive (or 37-minute walk) from Tisbury's Main Street.

According to the latest data from Rightmove, properties in Tisbury had an overall average price of £446,114 over the last year.

The majority of sales in Tisbury during the last year were detached properties, selling for an average price of £493,125. Terraced properties sold for an average of £449,357, with semi-detached properties fetching £474,750.

Overall, sold prices in Tisbury over the last year were 20 percent down on the previous year and 6 percent down on the 2021 peak of £475,939.
