Baking soda, more commonly known as bicarbonate of soda in the UK, is a cheap and cheerful way to clean your home. You can use it to do a whole range of jobs, from deodorising smelly fridges to unblocking sinks. Here are 10 ways to use bicarbonate of soda at home, according to cleaning expert and author of The 15-Minute Clean: the Quickest Way to a Sparkling Home Lynsey Crombie, aka Lynsey Queen of Clean’s (@lynsey_queenofclean on Instagram) blog.
Mattress
You need to clean your mattress at least twice a year, but baking soda will help to keep odours away in between deep cleans.
Lynsey said: “Bicarbonate of soda will eliminate nasty smells, so a monthly sprinkle on the mattress will keep your mattress nice and fresh.
“Lightly sprinkle over the mattress and leave for approximately one hour.
“Then, using the mattress attachment from your vacuum, hoover up the bicarbonate of soda.”

Carpets and rugs
Just like the mattress, baking soda will eliminate any smell from carpets and rugs.
Lynsey said: “Lightly sprinkle onto the carpet area - you can use a sieve if you like - and spread evenly.
“Leave to sit for approximately one hour and then vacuum up.
“Make sure you vacuum in a few different directions so you don’t leave any in the carpet.”
Whitening agent
Add a spoonful of baking soda into your wash with your whites and watch your whites come back to life.
Lynsey added: “This works particularly well with white trainers and converse.”
Kitchen sink
Cut a lemon in half and sprinkle bicarbonate of soda onto the lemon half.
Lynsey said: “Cover the entire half and then give the lemon a tiny squeeze until it fizzes.
“Gently run the lemon half all over the sink and then rinse with boiling water. This will give your sink a fabulous shine and smell.”
Tupperware
Tupperware always becomes stained when you use it to hold brightly coloured food.
Lynsey instructed: “Spread an even layer over stained Tupperware and leave it overnight with boiled water to see the stain disappear.”
