Getting rid of tough stains can often be a stressful experience in a bid to save your favourite clothes.

But an expert has shared an effective way to tackle stains without damaging the garment.

Alex Econs, founder of garment printing company ICON Printing, has revealed a simple, cost-effective solution for tackling tough stains.

Econs shares a three-step method using a miracle mixture that costs only 11p, proving that household items can be just as effective as expensive cleaning products.

Step 1: Spot-clean stains

When dealing with stubborn stains, Econs advises starting with spot cleaning.

This approach is particularly effective for gym kits and white polo t-shirts, which are notorious for attracting grass and mud stains.

“For grass and mud stains, try a natural vinegar-based solution,” Econs suggests.

“This method is gentle on garments and eco-friendly, as vinegar is less toxic than bleach.”

To create this solution at home, mix:

  • 1/2 tsp of washing powder
  • 1/4 cup of white vinegar
  • 1/4 cup of cool water

Apply the mixture directly to the stains, lightly brushing it into the fabric before rinsing with cold water.

Baking Soda

Step 2: Baking Soda Scrub

For more stubborn stains, Econs recommends a baking soda scrub.

This method is ideal for stains that resist initial spot cleaning.

“Mix baking soda with a small amount of water until you have a thick paste-like consistency,” Econs explains.

“Use an old toothbrush or cloth to gently work this into the stain. Let the paste sit for half an hour before rinsing with cold water.”

Step 3: Absorb Odours Overnight

If you have any clothes that have begun to smell unpleasant, baking soda can also be used to absorb odours.

This natural deodoriser is an effective and simple solution for freshening up clothes.

“Fill a small pouch of baking soda or leave out an open box near the uniform overnight for a natural refresh,” Econs advises.

These three steps not only offer an efficient way to tackle tough stains and odours but also promote a more sustainable approach to cleaning.
