A mother has been left mortified after she misunderstood the 'unusual' name of her son's new friend.

Young children often get words mixed up or mispronounce them, and that's exactly what happened when one little boy came home from Sunday school having made a new friend. The mum told Reddit users her five-year-old son had made a new friend at Sunday school, who he told her was named "Silence".

She admitted she initially judged the unusual name, thinking it was "odd". However, after meeting the boy's parents, she discovered the real pronunciation of his name, leaving her feeling rather embarrassed.

"My boys attend Sunday school before our church service and my five-year-old met a new boy two weeks ago," she said. "When we were discussing his class afterwards, he mentioned he had a new friend named Silence.

"I thought it was an odd name but have heard worse as a teacher. Last week he told me that Silence wasn't there and he must be sick. He spent all week talking about how he hopes Silence comes this week and isn't sick anymore."

"I finally got a chance to talk to the mum to try and set up a playdate. Turns out the little boy is named Silas. They moved here recently and she was happy her son made a friend quickly, even if my son thought his name was Silence for the last two weeks."

Commenters on the post were quick to share similar moments they had shared with their children. One revealed: "When I was like eight, I had a swim teacher named 'Dalton' but I thought he was 'Dolphin'. I was especially confused because his brother had a normal name."

Another commenter shared: "My son has a friend at daycare he called 'Amazon'. In this day and age I thought it was an interesting name for a four-year-old. But the name is actually Emerson."

And a third person posted: "My son's best camp friend is Lamb. Or, as his parents called him, Liam."
