How to make a hot toddy and mulled wine - four of the best recipes

Christmas is a time for family and friends, sharing precious moments together, swapping presents and enjoy delicious feasts. For many, it means a relaxing week or so off work, away from life’s stresses. And what better way to unwind them with some Christmas cocktails. Express Food has rounded up for of the tastiest hot toddy and mulled wine recipes to try this festive season to warm your cockles.
Hot Toddy
Ingredients:
- 800ml whisky - we recommend Buffalo Trace
- 3tsp honey
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 lemon
- 2 cloves
Method:
Combine in whiskey and honey in a glass, and whisk the two together.
Add to a saucepan with cinnamon sticks and boiling water and warm on a low heat.
Finish with a slice of lemon and clove.
Hendrick’s Hot Spice Apple
Instead of the classic, why not try this alternative apple flavour toddy.
Created by Hendrick’s Gin, the drink is described as “a curious hot toddy for the season of merriment…”
Ingredients:
- 150ml Hendrick's Gin
- 750ml spiced apple juice
- 2 cloves
- 2 crushed cardamom
- 2 star anise
- Juniper berries
- Peel of 1 orange
Method:
Simmer the apple juice with spices in a pan, add Hendrick’s Gin.
Strain into a tankard or teacup, and garnish with three slices of apple and a dusting of nutmeg.
Mulled wine recipe
Ingredients:
- Red wine
- 4 Cloves
- 3 star anise
- Lemon zest and squeeze of half a lemon
- 3 tablespoons of sugar
- 1 tsp of cinnamon or one large stick
Method:
Put all the ingredients in a large pan and cook on a low heat for 10 mins.
Remove from the heat and allow to cool for 30 minutes.
When ready to serve, heat again on the hob - without boiling - and pour into a mug.
Garish with a slice of fresh orange.

Mistletoe mule
Luxury mixer brand The London Essence Company described their mulled wine alternative as “a contemporary way to enjoy the flavours of mulled wine, featuring a spicy kick”.
Ingredients:
- 25ml of your favourite spiced rum
- 50ml mulled wine
- London Essence Ginger Beer
Method:
Pour all ingredients - cold - into a short rocks glass filled with ice. Top with London Essence Ginger Beer.
Garnish with a cinnamon stick.
