How to make teriyaki sauce
TERIYAKI sauce is a tangy and delicious condiment. Here's how you can make teriyaki sauce at home.
Known for its sweet flavour and stickiness, teriyaki sauce can be found in most fridges. But if you’re looking to make your own teriyaki sauce, look no further. It’s super quick and very easy to make from scratch.
What can you use teriyaki sauce for?
Teriyaki sauce is commonly used in a variety of Asian dishes.
If you omit the cornstarch, it is perfect for marinating meats and poultry.
Rather than using shop-bought sauces, you can try adding homemade teriyaki sauce to stir-fries.
You can also simply use it as a condiment, as it’s delicious with fried spring rolls or as a dip for prawn crackers.

How to make teriyaki sauce
To make teriyaki sauce, you will need:
- 85g of light brown sugar
- 75ml of soy sauce
- 2 heaped teaspoons of grated ginger
- 1-2 cloves of garlic, minced finely
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- 1 tablespoon of cornflour
Recipe:
In a saucepan, add 350ml of water, brown sugar, soy sauce, ginger and garlic over a medium heat.
Bring it to a light simmer and lower the heat, stirring frequently.
When the mixture is reducing and has started to thicken, stir in the honey and cornflour (how much cornflour will depend on how thick the sauce already is).

If the mixture starts to thicken too much, add more water and stir.
Keep stirring until the sauce reaches a glossy consistency.
Decant the mixture out of the saucepan, and let it cool before serving.
To serve, you can also mix in different ingredients to spice up your teriyaki sauce.
You can add chopped spring onions or sesame seeds to add some texture.
You can also stir in a few chilli flakes if you’d like a spicier sauce.
Drizzle the teriyaki sauce over meals like chicken and rice, or stir-fried vegetables.
You can also spoon the mixture straight into wraps or serve in a side dish with dumplings.
