'I'm a mechanic - this sleek used coupe is powerful and surprisingly fuel efficient'

Whilst there are cheaper choices, a well-known motoring personality has shared an interesting and incredibly fuel efficient BMW coupe.

A popular mechanic has taken to YouTube to recommend a high-performance four-seater that is not as expensive on the used car market as many would think.

Scotty Kilmer has worked with cars for more than 50 years and regularly posts videos to his YouTube channel, which sees him offer advice to help viewers avoid breakdowns and tests a range of new and used models.

In a recent video, Scotty takes a look around a 2021 BMW M4, a modern two-door coupe that offers attractive styling and a reliable engine.

He explained: "We have what's usually a nemesis to me: a BMW. It's a 2021 M440i, an extremely fast car that was bought [by the current owner] second-hand with an extremely low mileage. As you can see, it's a really beautiful car that he's just had detailed, and you can see it's made it pop.

"He loved the colour, he loved the car, and under the hood [bonnet], it's got an ultra-dependable BMW six-cylinder engine and an eight-speed transmission. This is one fast little car."

Introduced in 2020, the second-generation version of the BMW M4 has somewhat divisive styling, including a large set of the company's famous 'kidney grilles', but plenty of performance credentials.

Tested on the famous Nurburgring circuit, the M4 features a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol engine and the choice of a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic.

In its most powerful form, the M4 will accelerate from 0-62mph in just 3.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 174mph.

With used prices currently starting at about £50,000, the BMW M4 is hardly a people's car, however, drivers who are happily sacrificing some power can get the nearly identical-looking 4 Series from around the £25,000 mark.

Later in the video, Scotty suggested the BMW M4 is also surprisingly reliable and can be incredibly economical when driven carefully.

He added: "Now, the owner has one big problem with this car: he just wants to go to work, but people always want to race him in this. It's a fast car, there's no arguing that, but it's an everyday driver too. It does have a speed limiter at 155mph, but he says he's not taken it up to that.

"That's plenty fast enough for anyone who just wants to drive down the road, let's face the facts. Now, there aren't that many cars out there that will go that fast but also get 37mpg [45mpg imperial]. That's phenomenal for a vehicle that has this speed and a six-cylinder engine that's also notorious for lasting forever."

Taking to the roads, the mechanic noted that elements such as the suspension can be adjusted for either power or refinement.

He continued: "Now, we've got this on the nice suspension and this thing is riding smooth on these horrible Rhode Island roads. Now we're going to put it into Sports mode, and I can feel the bumps now!

"Here we go, let's listen to that motor. Wow, what a sound, it's got that BMW six-cylinder noise that isn't obnoxious like a Ferrari but shows that you mean business. That ZF eight-speed is a phenomenal transmission, you can drive it anywhere you want."
