Simple summer check can help drivers stay safe in an emergency - and it takes seconds

A top mechanic has recommended that motorists make a number of checks to their vehicle before setting off for a road trip this summer.

The car maintenance service Fixter has shared a number of tips to help motorists avoid expensive breakdowns from ruining their summer plans.

With many families set to take to the roads to see loved ones or go on holiday in the coming weeks, more drivers will be at risk of breaking down due to simple maintenance mistakes.

Limvirak Chea, motoring expert at Fixter, recommended that drivers planning to make a summer road trip make sure that they check the brake fluid levels of their vehicle.

He advised: "Checking your brake fluid is simple but crucial, it just requires a simple check. Make sure your car is on a level surface and the engine has cooled down after driving.

"Without opening the cap, examine the fluid level through the side of the reservoir. Most have 'MIN' and 'MAX' markings. As long as your fluid level is between these markings, you should be good to go."

Typically found on the driver's side of the engine bay, the brake fluid reservoir gives motorists a good view of how much of the liquid is available to help make braking smooth.

If brake fluid is running low, drivers will need to apply a lot more force to the brake pedal in order to slow down or stop their vehicle. Cars will also need a much longer distance in order to stop, putting motorists at a higher risk of accidents.

Most modern vehicles use Dot 4 brake fluid, which is widely available at automotive shops and online retailers for around £5 per bottle.

Similarly, Limvirak also suggested that drivers should keep their brake pads in good condition, highlighting that they can prolong the life of the vital components by driving considerately.

He explained: "It sounds simple, but focusing on your driving habits (eg: avoiding sudden, hard braking and not riding the brakes - especially when going downhill) can help keep brake pads in top working condition.

"While summer may see us packing more in our cars for those trips to the seaside, avoid adding too much unecessary weight. This can help reduce pressure on your brake pads when in use."

Finally, Limvirak advised motorists taking a long journey this summer to make sure that their tyres have the right pressure and enough tyre tread to prevent blowouts and handling issues.

He added: "High summer temperatures can increase the likelihood of punctures and even blowouts - both of which you'll want to avoid. Make sure all four tyres are properly inflated to ensure better road grip and try to avoid road hazards and potholes where possible.

"It's always worth regularly checking your tyre tread depth using the 20p test. Simply insert a 20p coin into the tread grooves. If you can see the outer band of the coin, your tyres may be below the legal limit and need replacing."
