An HGV training group has plunged into liquidation in another major blow for the UK’s transport industry. ELI Group, based in Bristol, offers comprehensive HGV and logistics training and is a major centre for learner drivers. There is no information on what the news could mean for job cuts at this stage.

The business claims to help drivers in acquiring their first HGV licence right up to support in finding a first job. According to the London Gazette, liquidators were appointed to the business on May 28, with the statement published late on June 1.

According to Companies House, the business was first incorporated back in December 2019, meaning they have been open for six and a half years.

The company offered a range of training courses including the option of Category C and Category C + E HGV assessments. This will allow road users to get behind the wheel of articulated lorries – the highest level of HGV qualification available.

ELI also offered HGV refresher training for motorists who are planning to get back behind the wheel of a lorry after some time away. ELI has also posted a series of online training courses, allowing motorists to refresh key skills from the comfort of their own homes. The company has enjoyed rave reviews, with HGV drivers praising the company for offering exceptional training.

One former customer posted: “I recently completed my HGV training with Eli, and overall it was a really good experience. My instructor Andy was brilliant from start to finish. He uses a bit of an old-fashioned teaching style firm but fair which is exactly what you want when learning to drive vehicles of this size.”

Another added: “This week I have done my HGV class 1 course with Eli HGV training. I can honestly say this is the best training I have ever experienced. Right from the start of my 5-day intensive course everyone at Eli made me feel welcomed and valued and everyone was very friendly.

A former student also wrote: “After a few bad experiences with other training providers, I found Eli Group who went above and beyond to cater for me, very friendly, honest and excellent trainers.”

It has been a tough few months for the haulage industry with a series of closures and firms dropping into administration.

The Road Haulage Association (RHA) has warned that hundreds more firms could be at risk, with the experts pointing the blame at rising fuel costs.
