Mechanic warns popular used performance car is 'like a death wish' for most drivers

Whilst many motorists dream of owning a high-performance American muscle car, the popular mechanic Scotty Kilmer urged drivers to avoid a certain model.

One of YouTube's most respected motoring experts has warned viewers not to buy a certain used performance car, stating they can be incredibly dangerous to drive.

Scotty Kilmer has worked with cars since the 1960s and regularly posts videos to his YouTube channel offering advice to viewers that can help them save money and avoid driving scams.

In a recent video, Scotty warns motorists to avoid buying a used Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat, stating that its powerful engine has caused many inexperienced drivers to get into accidents.

He claimed: "Most of it has to do with the drivers, they wrap them around trees and smash them up. They have so much horsepower and people who buy a vehicle like that are going to drive like maniacs.

"They have an extremely powerful V8 engine which is a tremendous gas [petrol] hog, and some guys just rev them too high until they blow. Any engine is going to blow when you redline [over-rev] it the whole time, slam it into different gears and do burnouts."

Whilst Dodge are not a large retailer of vehicles in the UK, many motoring fanatics and companies import left-hand drive models from America, including the Dodge Challenger.

With its 1960s-inspired 'coke-bottle' styling and exclusivity compared to other performance cars, many drivers dream of owning one.

However, Scotty suggested that motorists more used to driving a smaller-engined family car are often unprepared for the levels of power the Challenger provides, stating it could lead to serious accidents.

In particular, the YouTuber voiced his concerns for those who are still relatively new to driving, with many turning off the traction control for better acceleration and drifting.

He added: "The main problem is they have too much horsepower and younger kids drive them like they have a death wish.

"They're easy to flip over, they have way too much power and if people driving them turn off the traction control, doubly so."

First introduced in late 1969, the Dodge Challenger was introduced to rival the popular Ford Mustang and Pontiac Firebird, with the flagship model featuring a 7.2-litre V8 engine.

The current generation of Challenger, build since 2008, may not have engines quite so large as the original, but can be tuned to produce incredibly high levels of power for performance driving.

Whilst most examples found on the used car market in the UK make around 375bhp, the most powerful Challenger SRT Demon 170 can produce 1,025bhp, which is enough to accelerate from 0-60mph in just 1.66 seconds.
