Various members of the cast took to Twitter and Instagram to post photos saying their farewell to the programme.
American actress Elizabeth McGovern, who plays Lady Cora, Tweeted an image of herself with a rucksack on her shoulder and the iconic stately home in the background.
"Goodbye Highclere castle. Now I look at you from the outside, forever more," the 54-year-old star wrote on Twitter.
Meanwhile her onscreen daughter Lady Mary, portrayed by Michelle Dockery, uploaded an image of filming on a snow-capped street.

She shared the photo with the caption: "Winter is coming... #LastDaysOfDownton #beamish", which is both a Game of Thrones reference and also a hint that the picture is from filming on the Christmas special finale.
Michelle, 33, also shared a sombre black-and-white picture with the words: "Last cast and crew photo #finalcountdown #lastdaysofdownton #downton."
Kevin Doyle, who plays the hapless Joseph Molesley put up an image of himself with Michelle looking dour and the caption: "Oh how we laughed!"

In another sepia shot, the cast can be seen drinking merrily while other actors appear to be asleep on the sofa. The photo was shared with: "Last day of filming at Highclere-perhaps raiding the wine cellar wasn't the wisest choice."
The sixth series of Downton Abbey will be returning later this year with a traditional Christmas episode.
Writer Julian Fellowes has remained silent on just how the series will be ending and recently revealed that he had "mixed feelings" about the Downton film.
The show is set to receive a special Bafta award next month for its phenonmenal success and flying the flag for British drama around the world.
