La La Land is a romantic musical comedy-drama
Last night the film’s director Damien Chazelle paid tribute to the stars when collecting both the highly prized gong and the one for Best Director.
He said: “Both of you [gave] more than I ever could have expected from actors.
“Just the most transformative performances I've ever been lucky enough to film.”
La La Land beat other Oscar favourites Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight.

However both Gosling and Stone were defeated in the Best Actor and Best Actress categories by Casey Affleck for Manchester by the Sea and Natalie Portman for Jackie.
La La Land is a romantic musical comedy-drama that follows a musician and aspiring actress who meet in Los Angeles, only to fall madly in love.
The movie has been certified fresh with 96% positive reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes website after 124 critical pieces were taken into account.
The website’s consensus reads: “La La Land breathes new life into a bygone genre with thrillingly assured direction, powerful performances, and an irresistible excess of heart.”
The movie had the most nominations at the 22nd Critics’ Choice Awards, winning eight out of 12 possible gongs.
La La Land also won Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Editing, Best Score and Best Song.
Ryan Reynolds won Best Comedy and Best Comedy Actor for Deadpool
Another highlight of the night saw Ryan Reynolds win Best Comedy and Best Actor in a Comedy Movie for Deadpool.
Meanwhile Mel Gibson’s war epic Hacksaw Ridge picked up awards in Best Action Movie and Best Actor in an Action Movie.
La La Land will be released in UK cinemas on January 13, 2017.
