I Am Divine review: Portrait of 'brash, belligerent and bigger than life' drag queen
THE life of art house cinema's most outlandish star and director John Waters' muse is explored in this shocking and entertaining documentary
(Cert n/c; 90 mins)
There was never a drag queen quite like Divine. Harris Glen Milstead’s spiky alter ego was brash, belligerent and bigger than life in cult John Waters films such as Pink Flamingos and Hairspray.
I Am Divine offers an affectionate insight into the many sides of Milstead. There is touching testimony from his mother, a teenage girlfriend and colleagues who paint a picture of a shy teenager who developed into an outrageous star with a talent that had just begun to win mainstream success when he died in 1988.
A joyous hurrah for a unique figure.
