Idris Elba: James Bond casting rumours are ‘WILD’
The 46-year-old is currently 4-1 to be the next James Bond and has raised a few eyebrows in relation to the role in the last year.
Back in August, he tweeted out a selfie with the tagline: “My name’s Elba. Idris Elba.
Now in a new interview, the star has revealed just what he was up to.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Elba admitted: “I took the piss a little.”
Elba added: “But I was also reminding people that I never got referred to as James Bond.
“So, I was like, hello, my name is Elba. Idris Elba.
“It was a joke. I swear to God.”
The actor even joked about his Bond rumours as host of Saturday Night Live last week and took a selfie with Daniel Craig at the Golden Globes.
Asked if he was teasing taking over the role from Craig with the selfie, Elba said: “Nah, we just did it on the spur of the moment, thought it would be a laugh.
“It was a selfie. Didn’t realise it would be picture of the year.”
Meanwhile, Elba has revealed why he doesn’t think he would be right for Bond.
Speaking with Event magazine, he said: “Bond is one of the biggest franchises in the world, and for that reason, whoever ends up playing it, lives it.”
He added: “You’re THAT character, and known as that character for many, many years.
“I’m creating characters now that can still live alongside Idris.
“Not ones that take over me and solely define me.”
Daniel Craig stars in Bond 25, which is set for release in UK cinemas on April 3, 2020.
