He is expecting the child with his actress partner Louise Ford, 33.
He has two children, Ben, 23, and Lily 22, from his 24-year marriage to make-up artist Sunetra Sastry.
Miss Ford has been seen proudly showing her baby bump as she walked near the £4.65million home she and Atkinson share in north London.
“Rowan and Louise are over the moon and can’t wait for their new arrival,” a friend said.
“It’s a very happy time for them both.”
Atkinson, who is worth an estimated £70million, split from Miss Sastry, 56, two years ago in a 65-second divorce granted by a High Court judge.
The Oxford educated actor, comedian and screenwriter met Miss Ford – best-known for playing Kate Middleton in the Channel 4 comedy The Windsors – when they were in a West End play together.

Last month, Atkinson’s daughter Lily, who works as a burlesque dancer, stopped using her father’s surname and instead swapped to her mother’s maiden name.
“It’s a real mystery,” a friend said.
“Atkinson has been Lily’s name all her life but she’s dropped it and is styling herself as Lily Sastry.”
