The Hollywood actor happily posed with those working in Not Just Pets in Frome as he made an unannounced visit.
Sporting a long black wool coat layered over a purple shirt and a cream trilby hat, the 53-year-old seemed keen to keep a low-profile as he shopped.
Nicolas owns a cottage in the village of Baltonsborough, near Glastonbury, and is said to have been shopping with his family.
An unnamed source disclosed to The Sun: "It was a real surprise to see Nic in the shop.

He was really polite and friendly and spoke really highly of the area
"He was with his wife and son, they browsed some of the pets we have and he bought some pond fish.
"He was really polite and friendly and spoke really highly of the area. He's had a house around here for a while."
The A-list actor has previously spoken about his love of Somerset revealing that he spends the Christmas holidays there.
"I usually spend the winter holidays here, Christmas and what-not," Nicolas divulged in 2013.
"But I think in a couple of years I'll be spending more time here. I'm hopeful that tI'll be back here.

"In Somerset, I enjoy the peace of the oak trees and the rolling green hills and I like going into Glastonbury. It's like walking into a pack of Tarot cards."
Earlier this year, Nicolas was rushed to hospital after a "freak accident" on the set of his new film in Bulgaria.
He was reportedly shooting the bank heist blockbuster when the incident took place, forcing him to take two weeks off work.
His reps confirmed to Deadline that he sought medical attention in Sofia but later flew back to the US to undergo treatment.
