Rod Stewart has hit back at claims his marriage to Penny Lancaster is struggling. The legendary musician, 79, took to Instagram as he slammed rumours of a growing "rift" between the couple.

He began: "We wanted to set the record straight. There is absolutely no rift between Penny and I and no disagreement over where we should reside, in fact it's the opposite. We moved back to our beloved Britain a year ago but are fortunate enough to also have homes in different countries, which we love to visit."

The rock icon continued: "Originally we did think it made sense to sell our house in LA, but having spent a wonderful time there this summer with family and friends during my Vegas residency, we realised that it makes sense to keep our house there.

"Two of my eldest children still live in Celtic House (the LA residence). Penny and I could not be more in love with each other after 27 glorious years. Please trust me on this... there's no disharmony in our marriage."

He signed off the post: "Rod 'a very lucky man' Stewart." Sir Rod's statement comes after it was reported Penny, 53, was "furious" as her husband was refusing to leave their LA mansion.

The couple had allegedly decided to sell their Beverly Hills home and permanently relocate to their £4.3million countryside estate in Essex. However, reports suggested Sir Rod had changed his mind, with the couple reaching a "stalemate" over the disagreement.

"Penny has no plans to return to LA, which she's not a fan of, while Rod has no plans to move back right now," an insider told MailOnline. "They're at a stalemate and Penny is angry that Rod’s gone back on his word. It’s about saving their marriage right now."

The nine-bed property was up for sale according to the publication, but the Maggie May hitmaker "rejected two offers". Earlier in the month, Sir Rod was forced to cancel the eagerly awaited 200th show of his The Hits Las Vegas residency after falling ill with strep throat.

In a heartfelt message to his fans, the rock icon expressed his deep regret and apologised for being unable to perform. He said: "Most people can work with strep throat but obviously not me."

Two more concerts were axed just days later due to Sir Rod battling Covid. A statement read: "We regret to announce that tonight's Rod Stewart concert in Stateline, NV and his August 10 show in Lincoln, CA have been postponed, as the singer recovers from a summer strain of Covid-19."
