Amy Dowden's twin sister Rebecca has opened up about feeling "a sense of guilt" whilst her sibling battled breast cancer. Amy was first diagnosed with aggressive stage three cancer in May last year.

After multiple rounds of chemotherapy, doctors told Amy a few months ago that she no longer has cancer in her body. However, she needs monthly injections for the next five years.

Speaking to The Times, Amy and Rebecca opened up about their close relationship as sisters and how Amy has coped living with Crohn's disease and breast cancer.

"It’s hard being a twin not to feel a sense of guilt. I’ve lived a carefree life. I did all the things you should do as a youngster — going on my first girls’ holiday, going to university, travelling — but because of Crohn’s, Amy never got to do those things," said Rebecca.

"When she got her cancer diagnosis last year I would have done anything to take the pain from her. There’s almost nothing we don’t share, but being a midwife I’m careful about how much I talk about my job because I’m conscious that, after cancer treatment, Amy has her fertility journey ahead of her.

"It just doesn’t make sense to me that we shared a womb yet she has been given so much to deal with."

Amy will be competing in her eighth series of Strictly Come Dancing following her battle with breast cancer. She announced the exciting news this summer that she will be returning as a professional after pulling out of the 2023 series.

In previous years, Amy has taken to the dancefloor with the likes of Dan Walker, JJ Chalmers, Tom Fletcher and James Bye. She is the first Welsh professional to take part in Strictly.

Amy's return comes after it was announced that a BBC film has been made documenting her battle with breast cancer. The documentary covers 15 months of Amy's journey from her initial diagnosis to getting the all clear.

Having taken last year off due to her cancer battle, Amy said she is "happy and grateful" to be back.
