Fred Sirieix has shared how he came about making an appearance on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing. The Channel 4 First Dates star revealed that there was an "embarrassing" reason behind his stint on the popular dance show.

Writing in his book, Seriously British, the 52-year-old French maître d'hôtel said: "I'm confident and comfortable with myself but I'm not immune to embarrassment. I was frightened about going on Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special in 2021.

"I was scared of not being able to dance and petrified of making a fool of myself, especially because I knew my kids would be watching. But I've learned that delivering something that you didn't know you could do is what gives you confidence. The more you put yourself out there, the better you feel.

"So I said yes when the producers of the show invited me to come on precisely because I was scared. I took it as a sign for me to rise to the challenge."

Expanding on how he rarely gets embarrassed, Fred wrote: “I’ve grown up comfortable in my skin and, if anything, that’s actually improved with age.

"How does that manifest itself? I sometimes just take my clothes off. It happens a lot at home or when I want to wind Gordon up. It’s so easy to wind him up, it’s practically a hobby.”

Speaking about the release of his book and his close friendship with Gino D'acampo and Gordon Ramsay, Fred told Express.co.uk: "It's a very unique friendship. I don't have any other friendships like this. The dynamic is a bit mad but it is what it is.

"And this is why it works because we are so different. With the three of us, we are chalk and cheese."

Speaking about what it's like to work with his friends and colleagues on Gordon, Gino and Fred's Road Trip, Fred added: "It's the only show that, when we film, I don't know what's going to happen.

"You know that you're going to go and do something, but nobody knows.

"Nobody knows, because it's just so unpredictable. Anything could erupt at any moment."

Seriously British by Fred Sirieix is published by Bloomsbury on 12th September.
