Sir Elton John fired a dig at King Charles and Queen Camilla while discussing their wedding.

The Rocketman singer, who remains a close friend of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle according to the Daily Mail, entered into a civil partnership with David Furnish at Windsor Guildhall in 2005. Just eight months earlier the-then Prince Charles and Camilla married at the same venue.

Reminiscing about his wedding in Variety magazine, Sir Elton recalled the day. He said: “We did it at the same place as Charles and Camilla. We had a bigger crowd.”

Charles and Camilla’s wedding was reportedly attended by more than 20,000 people, reports the Daily Mail. Meanwhile, the BBC at the time reported Sir Elton’s big day was attended by “hundreds of well wishers”.

Sir Elton, 77, is said to have paid the policing bill on the day. Daily Mail Diary Editor Richard Eden says that while it is unclear how big the crowds were, the singer could have been “given a figure” by the police.

Charles and Camilla meanwhile are said to have planned to wed at Windsor Castle, but licensing laws meant it would have to be open to other couples for at least three years. It prompted the shift to Guildhall.

Daily Mail Royal Editor Rebecca English attended the King’s wedding. She said: “I was standing outside the Guildhall and we were packed like sardines. There were people with flags and bunting, so I’m really sorry but I don’t think he knows what he’s talking about.”

Pop superstar Elton was said to be a friend of Harry and Meghan's after he sang Candle in the Wind at Princess Diana’s funeral. However, The Mirror reports the pair’s friendship became frosty after the singer opted to have his autobiography serialised in the Daily Mail.

In his memoir Spare, Harry says he felt he had no choice but to vocalise his concerns when he was staying with Sir Elton in Paris, claiming the paper made their lives “miserable”. The award-winning singer is said to have replied saying he “wanted people to read” the book, prompting Harry to drop the matter in order to “not spoil” his holiday.

However, it reportedly led to the pair not sharing as close of a bond as they once had.
