Homes Under the Hammer presenter Martin Roberts has opened up about his emotional reaction to being mentioned in the Welsh Parliament in an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk. The BBC star appeared overwhelmed with excitement as he discussed his contributions towards publicity for the Rhondda Tunnel in the Afan Valleys, South Wales.

In a wider chat about Gas Safety Register's newest campaign combating confusion over household protection policies, Martin spoke of his amazement after he was named by First Minister of Wales, Vaughan Gething. “Hey, this is fun! For the first time ever, I was mentioned in Parliament - in the Welsh Parliament,” he said.

“The party leader, Vaughan Gething, mentioned me,” Martin gushed excitedly. “He said: ‘I should do a shout-out to Martin Roberts from Homes Under the Hammer, who is doing so much to get publicity for the tunnel.

“I’m like, ‘Oh my god! I’m so proud!’” Martin exclaimed enthusiastically. “Oh my gosh. I don’t know whether to make it into a meme or something.

“And it’s like, ‘Wow - that’s amazing!’ It’s just like Rishi Sunak in Parliament going ‘Hey Mart!’. I mean, what the f***! Wow.

“So that was a very good day,” Martin concluded. “I was very excited about that.”

According to the Rhondda Tunnel Society website, the organisation “was formed in the summer of 2014 with the initial aim of siting the long-lost tunnel portal stone in a suitable location as near as possible to the entrance of the disused and buried Rhondda Tunnel at Blaencwm.”

After an unexpectedly huge swell of public support for the project, their aim is not to “not only returning the stone to its proper place above the tunnel entrance, but to re-open the Rhondda Tunnel in its entirety for cycling and walking.

“And in doing so, allowing current and future generations to enjoy this amazing feat of engineering.”

The website continues to say: “The re-opened tunnel will not only reconnect the communities of the Rhondda and Afan Valleys, but at almost 2 miles long, it will be the longest cycling and walking tunnel in Europe, and the second longest in the world.”

In April of last year, Martin, alongside Welsh Conservative politician Joel James MS, joined the Rhondda Tunnel Society to meet with Secretary of State for Wales David TC Davies.

It marked a real milestone for the Rhondda Tunnel Society and the development of their campaign, with Joel pointing out that re-opening the Rhondda Tunnel would provide an opportunity to increase connectivity between Blaencwm and Blaengwynfi.

This was an important benefit to note, as the connectivity would undoubtedly provide an economic boost to one of the most deprived areas of Wales.

Elsewhere in the interview, Martin shared some must-have tips to help homeowners with home insurance confusion and to stop them from spending cash on unexpected repairs.
