Dr Michael Mosley was renowned for his adventurous spirit and love of risk-taking years before his tragic death at age 67. After his body was found on the Greek island of Symi on Sunday morning, his wife Dr Clare Bailey said that it was his daring personality which made him “so special”.

Five years ago, Mr Mosley issued a heartbreaking piece of advice after the realisation he had pushed his body to its limit.

The TV doctor ended up in hospital in 2019 when he and Clare visited his brother John in Cornwall.

Despite freezing weather, they decided to go swimming in the sea. However, after a few minutes in the water, they found it too cold and challenged each other to race back to the shore.

He wrote in his MailOnline column at the time: “I remember thinking, ‘I am definitely going to be able to beat Clare to the land’. And then it all went blank.

“The next thing I remember is being in A&E at hospital in Truro, with Clare sitting beside me looking extremely concerned.”

His wife informed him that he had emerged from the water disoriented, repeatedly asking whether it was 2017 and if he had passed out.

A doctor said that Michael had experienced transient global amnesia (TGA) which is a sudden, temporary loss of short-term memory commonly triggered by cold temperatures, vigorous exercise or being under extreme stress.

After his ordeal, Michael vowed never to go cold water swimming alone again.

He wrote: “The serious point here is, don’t go cold water swimming by yourself, particularly if you’re not used to it, because there are risks.

“You know, particularly if you’re unfit, you could have a heart attack, drop dead. You could have your memory wiped. Who knows? So try and do this sort of thing with someone else.”

The 67-year-old's body was found on Sunday in a rocky area near Agia Marina beach. He had left friends on the beach at around 1.30pm to go for a walk.

Footage reportedly found by a beach bar at Agia Marina shows what appears to be the TV doctor making his way down a rocky slope close to a fence before he falls out of view.

Greek police spokeswoman Konstantia Dimoglidou told the BBC that an initial post-mortem examination had been carried out, confirming there were no injuries on Mosley's body.

It was estimated that the time of death was around 4pm and Ms Dimoglidou said that the position of his body indicates he died of natural causes.

She also said toxicology and histology reports will take place.
