The top 10 best islands in Europe have been revealed, and three of these sun-kissed getaways with turquoise-coloured waters belong to the same country.

It may come as no surprise that Italy had the highest number of islands in the top 10.

With over 1,000 miles of coastline and a mountainous interior, it is easy to see why Sardinia, with its dazzling white sands, came as the second-best island in Europe.

Sardinia has a reputation as a paradise island thanks to its home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Italy, famed for their untouched beauty, from hidden coves to sprawling sandy shores.

Sardinia has nine certified villages on “The Most Beautiful Villages of Italy” list, which recognises the best in the country for conservation and artistic heritage.

There is more than meets the eye with this island as Sardinia has incredible hilltop ruins, endless amounts of unspoilt nature and vineyards thick with fruit.

Just behind Sardinia, in third place, is the largest and most magical island in the Mediterranean.

Sicily enchants visitors with its picturesque beaches, history and gastronomic delights that will leave you wanting to come back for more.

The Sicilian coastline is a whopping 620 miles long, with San Vito Lo Capo in Trapani and Cefalù in Palermo regarded as some of the best.

The charming southern Italian town is packed with grand cathedrals and phenomenal markets.

Sicily is also home to Mount Etna, an active volcano on the east coast of Sicily.

It is the tallest volcano in Europe and the highest mountain in the Mediterranean, reaching a height of 11,014. However, its height fluctuates due to eruptions.

Coming in ninth place is an island covered with lemon trees, vineyards and olive groves.

The rugged island of Ischia in Italy is home to thermal pools, stunning vineyards, and blooming gardens.

Known as the Capital of European Spas, it’s famous for its spas, and it’s no surprise it was once a go-to destination for Romans.

This lesser-known Southern Italian island destination offers visitors a taste of the real Italy with hardly any tourists.

Ischia is where the Italians go for a relaxing escape away from the crowds.

However, according to Conde Nast Traveller, the best island in Europe is Crete, the largest of the Greek islands.

With its sun-drenched beaches, historic villages, tavernas, and restaurants, it is no wonder the island is such a hit with holidaymakers.
