Britons across the UK will flock to their favourite summer destinations throughout the school holidays, with many no doubt heading to the likes of Spain, the Canary Islands and Greece.

The appeal of relaxing in the sun and taking a dip in a pool is what draws many holidaymakers to hotel resorts, but it means spending time in the company of other sunseekers.

Surrounded by sunbeds, shared hotel pools are where you'll find guests flocking on a hot day, but it's not always plain sailing.

New research by online retailer Northerner, has revealed the poolside habits Brits find most annoying, with urinating in the pool topping the chart.

Results from the survey discovered that "uncontrollable children" are another contender and almost a quarter of people surveyed agreed that topless sunbathing was unacceptable.

Top 10 biggest poolside annoyances

  1. Having a wee in the pool
  2. Not controlling the kids
  3. Shouting
  4. Playing music
  5. Smoking
  6. Excessive drinking
  7. Eating food in the pool
  8. Saving sun loungers with towels
  9. Vaping
  10. Sunbathing topless

The data revealed that Boomers have the least patience with boozy Brits and chaotic little ones, with a staggering 76 percent of people surveyed admitting to leaving the area if children are not being controlled.

Additionally, 70 percent of people said they turn their nose up to anyone excessively drinking by the poolside.

But while Boomers might seem the most judgemental, surprisingly, sunbathing topless isn’t an issue for them, with two-thirds happily accepting this around the pool.

Comparatively, 80 percent of people in the survey who are Gen Z or Millenial admitted to not being bothered by sun lounger saving, suggesting that they could be the worst culprits.

One in two Boomers said it was one of their biggest bugbears when visiting their favourite holiday destinations.

As for smoking, Markus Lindblad from Northerner said: "It’s been interesting to see that smoking is still one of the main annoyances for Brits abroad, especially as many holiday destinations have different laws prohibiting smoking in certain areas.

"This can easily be solved by educating holidaymakers and the other alternatives that they can take abroad, such as tobacco-free gum."
