‘I visited one of Europe’s cutest winter holiday destinations and it’s great value’
I visited Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, and thought it was a fantastic affordable choice for a winter mini-break.
Christmas might be over but with January just around the corner, we’re far from seeing the back of winter.
If you’re in the mood for a winter mini-break, why not consider Estonia’s gorgeous capital city, Tallinn?
I visited the city during winter and there’s no end of cosy cafes to curl up in as well as plenty of attractions to explore.
Tallinn’s walled and cobblestoned Old Town is also very compact, making the city very walkable for tourists.
It’s very easy to get around on foot or public transport to all the main attractions so there’s no need to fork out for a rental car.
One of the city’s top attractions, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral features in nearly every photograph of the city. It’s an impressive building that’s well worth visiting on a mini-break.
If you want the best photos and views of the city, head up to the Patkuli viewing platform, a free lookout with breathtaking views of Tallinn.
Tallinn’s UNESCO Old Town is ideal for wandering. Check out the beautiful Masters’ Courtyard for chocolatiers and craft shops.

History buffs will love the Kiek in de Kok Fortification Museum. Tourists can climb the city’s historic towers or check out underground passages.
After exploring, head to one of Tallinn’s cafes for a hot chocolate or a mulled wine. Il Drakoon is a fun medieval themed restaurant in the heart of the Old Town.
If you’re looking for an affordable lunch, I loved the pancakes at Pub Kompressor. The restaurant has a huge pancake menu with great vegetarian and kid friendly options.
Wizz Air and Ryanair both offer affordable budget flights direct to Tallinn and the journey takes just under three hours.
