British tourists in Ecuador are urged to wear masks or stay indoors as forest fires impact air quality.
British tourists travelling to Ecuador have been issued an urgent safety warning due to ongoing forest fires impacting air quality across parts of the country, including the capital, Quito.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advises visitors to take precautions, such as wearing face masks or staying indoors, particularly in areas where air quality has significantly deteriorated.
In a recent statement, the FCDO warned: "Forest fires are affecting some parts of Ecuador, including Quito.
"This is having an impact on air quality in the areas most affected by the fires. It is advisable to wear a face mask if the air quality is particularly bad, or to stay inside."
Holidaymakers have been urged to closely follow the advice of local authorities and avoid travelling to areas where fires are active.
Ecuador, a popular destination for British tourists due to its stunning Galápagos Islands, the Amazon rainforest, and breathtaking landscapes is currently grappling with multiple crises.
In addition to the forest fires, visitors have also been warned about nationwide power outages and water rationing.
As of September 23, Ecuador has been experiencing sporadic power cuts that can last up to 12 hours per day, with water shortages affecting several regions.
Additionally, a State of Emergency has been declared in certain areas due to escalating armed violence, further complicating travel in the country.
The FCDO advises travellers to stay informed about these disruptions and consult local power and water providers for updates.

The FCDO has issued a caution against all but essential travel to certain coastal regions, including Esmeraldas, Manabí, Guayas, and El Oro, as well as areas within 20km of the Ecuador-Colombia border, due to security risks.
However, travel through Guayaquil Airport and onward to the Galápagos Islands remains unaffected by these restrictions.
