Dreaming of escaping the crowds? A gorgeous island nation off the coast of Africa is one of the world’s least visited countries.
While it’s no surprise that top destinations such as Amsterdam and Paris can end up feeling a little crowded, it doesn’t always equate to the most relaxing holiday experience.
Luckily, there are still a few incredible destinations where travellers might find they’re one of the only tourists. According to World Population Review statistics, Sao Tome and Principe is one of the world’s least visited countries.
Just under 35,000 people travelled to the African country in 2019 but those that did will have found a breathtaking unspoiled paradise.
The two-island nation is Africa’s second smallest country and is a haven of natural beauty and an ideal destination for eco-tourists.
Lonely Planet states: “A canopy of green broken by spires of primordial rock, Principe is a magnificent Lost World, offering fantastic beaches, jungle exploration, snorkelling, fishing, birdwatching and a handful of interesting accommodations.”
Principe island is home to just 7,000 people and tourists may find they’re one of just a few travellers. Many of the islands’ main attractions are on Sao Tome island.
