Gutted! Wayne Rooney apologises to fans as England are sent packing from World Cup
MANCHESTER UNITED and England star Wayne Rooney admits he is 'gutted' and 'absolutely devastated' after the Three Lions saw their World Cup campaign in Brazil end after just eight days.
Two consecutive defeats to Italy and Uruguay, coupled with Costa Rica's shock victory over Cesare Prandelli's side, sees England exit the tournament at the group stage for the first time since 1958, and they could also be on course to become the first squad to lose all three group games in England's proud World Cup history.
Many of the squad members have come under fire for their underwhelming performances, with Rooney failing to shine against the Italians but managing to bag his first World Cup goal against Uruguay, and some may have played their last game in an England shirt.
World Cup hopes turn to despair for England fans
Sorry to all the fans that travelled and at home that we haven't done better...gutted!
Hodgson, who earlier was backed in his role as manager until 2016, will have a number of big calls to make once the squad leave Brazil after they face Costa Rica on Tuesday, and in the meantime Rooney has taken to Facebook to apologise to the millions of England fans for his team's abysmal performance.
He said: "Absolutely devastated to be out of the World Cup. Going into each game we had great belief in ourselves but unfortunately it hasn't worked out.
