UFC Liverpool: Darren Till misses weight, but fight with Stephen Thompson will go ahead
DARREN TILL has missed weight for the biggest fight of his life, but he will still get the chance to lock horns with the No.1 ranked welterweight in the world.
Till will lock horns with Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson tomorrow night in the main event of UFC Fight Night 130, which takes place in his hometown of Liverpool.
In order for the welterweight bout to have proceeded, the Merseysider had to make the 171lbs weight limit, which he has missed in the past.
Till missed the initial 9am-11am weigh-in window, which raised concerns over tomorrow's main event.
He was given an extra hour to weigh in due to a family emergency and came to the scale 25 minutes after the allotted weigh-in time.
And to the shock of the attending media and his fans, 'The Gorilla' weighed in three-and-a-half pounds over the 171lbs weight limit.
Till wasn't given any extra time shed the excess weight, which threw his much-anticipated fight with 'Wonderboy' up in the air.
Thompson could very well have decided that he no longer wants to fight the Liverpudlian after news of his failed weight cut broke.
Darren Till: I care about Liverpool’s Champions League clash
I want to apologise for missing weight. S**t happens.
Till was cleared to compete by UFC doctors to compete and all that remained for the fight to go ahead was for Thompson's team to reach an agreement with the UFC brass, which they managed to do.
Thompson's father, Ray, issued a statement on Till's failed weight cut to MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani before the bout was official, which read: "Listen, Till called us out. He’s been a bit disrespectful during the course of promoting this fight.
“We came across the world, into his hometown, in front of his people and we made weight!
“Stephen is a fighter and would NEVER want to disappoint fans (short of illness) and came to fight! His management is working out the details.”
Till was disappointed to have missed weight and issued an apology to Thompson and his fans during the ceremonial weigh-ins.
He said: "I want to apologise for missing weight. S**t happens."
