On Wednesday night, Mayweather Jr took aim at his most recent opponent with an Instagram post referring to his alleged run-in with a man who has deep connections to Ireland's criminal underworld.
“I already f**ked you up in 2017 now they about to f**k you up in 2018,” Mayweather wrote alongside a picture of a headline about the unproven story.
“You’re about to start your new year off with a bang.”
Not one to let Mayweather get one over him, McGregor responded to the former five-weight world champion's dig with a short and concise tweet.
He tweeted: "I am the Cartel."
Mayweather soon caught wind of McGregor's retort and promptly took another shot at the UFC's poster boy, this time with a picture of 'The Notorious' wincing after finding himself on the receiving end of a punch from the Michigan native during their much-maligned boxing match.

The public back-and-forth between Mayweather and McGregor comes a few weeks after UFC president Dana White revealed 'The Notorious' wants another crack at 'Money'.
"Conor wants that fight again, really badly. Of course," White said during an appearance on FOX Sports' Undisputed.
"I thought, leaving the arena that night, I told Conor, ‘What you did was amazing.’
Conor McGregor's response to Floyd Mayweather
"I was sitting there with my partner Lorenzo and I kept saying, “Oh my god, we found this kid in Ireland four years ago, he’s going into the sixth round with Floyd Mayweather. He’s going to the seventh round with Floyd Mayweather'.
"He did extremely well. But Conor was not happy with his performance. And obviously, Conor truly believed he was going to win that fight.
"I know deep down that he would do that fight again. But he needs to get back to MMA and defend his title."
