McGregor entered the boxing world in August to take part in a multi-million-pound bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
The Irishman put on a valiant display against the former five-weight world champion before succumbing to fatigue and being stopped in the tenth round.
The build-up to the much-maligned bout was unprecedented and saw the pair take part in a whirlwind press tour, which touched down in three countries in the space of four days.
Much of the intrigue surrounding the contest centred around a question often asked by fight fans: Can a mixed martial artist beat an elite boxer in a boxing match?
And that curiosity led to 4.3m combats sports enthusiasts in North America parting with their hard-earned cash to watch the contest.
McGregor: Mayweather was more composed and experienced
Showtime Sports released the figures on Thursday night, which also revealed that Mayweather vs. McGregor generated over £447m ($600m) in revenue.
The 4.3m figure saw Mayweather vs. McGregor fall 300,000 buys short of the all-time record, which is held by Mayweather’s 2015 ‘Fight of the Century’ with Manny Pacquiao.

Mayweather vs. McGregor set a new pay-per-view buy record in the UK, with one million households paying to watch the biggest fight of the year.
The total pay-per-view sale figure for the bout has not yet been released, but it is expected to top six million buys.
