Angelique Kerber opens up on how to beat Serena Williams at Wimbledon
ANGELIQUE KERBER believes concentrating on her own game is the key to beating Serena Williams.
Kerber is one win away from a Wimbledon final where she will either face Julia Goerges or Williams, who would be chasing a 24th Grand Slam title.
But former world No 1 Kerber has denied Williams a top-level title before: the first of her two Grand Slam triumphs came when she beat the legendary American in the Australian Open final back in 2016.
And the 30-year-old believes that it was her focus on that day that helped her to take a three-set win in Melbourne.
“I think I was not thinking too much about against who I'm playing,” Kerber said this week.
“I was just trying to playing my own match.
“That was my first Grand Slam, so I was trying also to enjoying it.”
Williams has barely played in the last 18 months having taken a year off to start a family.
Wimbledon, where she was made the No 25 seed despite having fallen outside the top 150 in the world, is only her fourth tournament of 2018 but she has only dropped one set on her way to the semi-finals.
And Kerber, who has just two wins over her in eight meetings, knows she cannot underestimate her current level.
“She played well again. I think it's great what she done so far,” Kerber added.
“She is here. She came back. She is, yeah, fighting.
“I think she's the best player. She's a champion.
“I have a lot of respect of her as a person, but also as a tennis player.
“Yeah, I think she is coming back, for sure.”
