Rafael Nadal: Dominic Thiem slammed for ‘giving up’ during French Open final
DOMINIC THIEM was wrong to attempt the tweener during his French Open final clash with Rafael Nadal.
Nadal describes French Open win as 'amazing and emotional'
That is the opinion of former British No 1 and tennis pundit Greg Rusedski.
Thiem was beaten in straight sets by Rafael Nadal in his first ever Grand Slam final on Sunday.
Midway through the first set the Austrian attempted the tweener, or the between-the-legs shot, following a fine lob from Nadal.
The shot only managed to hit the net and Nadal won the point.
You’ve got to man up, show Rafa you’re there for every single point
Rusedski says the shot showed to his opponent Thiem had given up that point, something he should never do.
“Dominic Thiem, what are you doing?” Rusedski told Eurosport.
“You know I can’t stand the tweener.
"You’ve got to man up, show Rafa you’re there for every single point.
“Don’t try the tweener because it says ‘I’m giving up on that point’.
“You never win the point with the tweener, it was absolute rubbish.
“The tweener’s only for exhibitions ladies and gentlemen, it’s not for the real stuff.”
